How to Type the Enye Letter (ñ) on Your Computer or Laptop

There are times when we needed to type a word with a letter enye (ñ), but we just couldn’t figure out how and where to find it.
If you have the letter ñ in your keyboard, then good for you!
But if you don’t, sometimes, you may end up getting frustrated and you just type the letter n.
The enye (ñ), according to Wikipedia, is a letter of the modern Latin alphabet that is formed by placing a tilde on top of the letter N. The enye letter became a part of the Spanish alphabet in the 18th century. As a former Spanish colony, the Philippines adopted the enye and included it in the Filipino alphabet as a separate letter.
Although the enye code is commonly used in Filipino publications and correspondence, it’s not included in computer keyboards just like other letters with diacritic marks. To type Ñ or ñ using your computer or laptop, you need to use a special combination on your keyboard.

How to Type Enye on a Windows Computer

To type the small letter ñ, hold down the ALT key while pressing 0241 or 164 on your number pad:
ALT + 0241
ALT + 164


  • To create small letter enye (ñ) using Numpad:
    Alt +164 or Alt + 0241 – for small letter ñ
  • To create big or capital letter enye (Ñ) using Numpad:
    Alt + 165 or Alt + 0209 – for uppercase letter Ñ
Option 2 – For laptop which doesn’t have a numeric pad, use “Character Map” app to create letter enye (ñ).

2 How to Insert the Enye Symbol Using Character Map




If you don’t want to remember the keyboard combinations above or if your number pad is broken or missing, you can simply insert the Ñ or ñ symbol using Character Map in Windows 10. Just click the Windows icon, choose Windows Accessories, then click Character Map.

This will launch the Character Map application. Choose the Ñ or ñ symbol as shown in the screenshot below, press Select and then Copy. You can now paste it (Ctrl + V) to your document or file.




How to Type Enye on a Mac Computer



To type the small letter ñ on a Mac computer, hold down the option key and press the “N” key, then press the “N” key again without holding the option key:
option + N, N
To type the capital letter Ñ, hold down the option key and press the “N” key, then press the Shift key together with the “N” key:
option + N, Shift + N
